Arts
At Harford Day School, arts education is a cornerstone of our middle school experience. Through drama, music, dance, and visual arts, children in middle school explore creativity, critical thinking, and self-expression while building collaboration and confidence. From visual arts to drama and music, students explore imaginative ways to grow both academically and socially.
By participating in the Harford Day School arts program, students improve fine motor skills, memory, focus, and cultural understanding. The arts help students develop confidence, emotional intelligence, and a lifelong appreciation for creativity. At Harford Day, the arts are more than extracurricular—they’re an essential part of developing well-rounded, inspired learners who shine both on stage and in life.
Fall Drama
Each fall, middle school students participate in a fall drama. Students in grades 6-8 are welcome to participate. Auditions determine actors, and interviews assign other roles such as stage crew, tech crew, or set design assistants. Under adult supervision, students gain hands-on experience with all aspects of production, enhancing teamwork, leadership, and practical problem-solving—key benefits of comprehensive arts education.Spring Musical
In the spring, all middle school students have the opportunity to perform, dance, or act as stage or tech crew members in the middle school musical. Typically, more than half of the students opt to participate. Productions range from classics like Aladdin and The King and I to favorites like Beauty and the Beast and Peter Pan. In recent years, a student has served as assistant director, gaining leadership and artistic insight.
