Financial Aid

Financial Aid Philosophy

Harford Day School recognizes that funding an education is an investment that not all families are able to manage without some financial support. Need-based financial aid is available to mission-appropriate students whose families’ value an independent education and will support the policies of Harford Day School.

While there is a limited amount of financial aid available, the School strives to meet the demonstrated needs of its current and prospective families. Approximately 30% of our enrolled students receive some need-based financial aid.

In addition to reviewing the financial aid application and several years of a family’s tax returns, the School also considers lifestyle choices and spending patterns as part of the award process. In fairness to all applicants, education must be a top priority over, for example, luxury cars, vacations, and club memberships.

All financial aid inquires and awards are kept in the strictest of confidence. This information is not shared with faculty or students. We request that families receiving aid keep the same confidence regarding aid and awards.

Harford Day School does not discriminate on the basis of color, creed, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, or disability.

Key Financial Considerations for determining awards

  • Total Family Income
  • IRS forms and schedules
  • Net worth, including real estate, bank accounts, non-retirement investments
  • Debt to Equity Ratio
  • Number of children in the family and the number in tuition charging schools
  • Discretionary or luxury expenditures
  • Extenuating circumstances ( health, change in employment, other)

The Financial Aid Process

Harford Day School strives to partner with families to fulfill the gap between the cost of tuition and the family’s ability to pay. A family’s expected financial contribution is determined by completion of a standardized, online application that is administered by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). School and Student Services (SSS) by NAIS allows independent (private) schools to use the same process and information to objectively assess what a family can afford to pay for tuition. The Harford Day School’s Financial Aid Committee uses the SSS reports as a guide for making financial aid awards.

The financial aid application process and timeline are outlined in the table below. Financial Aid Applications are due December 15, 2016. Applications will be considered after the deadline as funds allow. If you have questions regarding financial aid, please contact Valerie Kohles, Director of Finance and Operations , at 410-809-2396 or Diane Russell, Director of Admissions, at 410-809-2403.

Frequently Asked Questions:

If we apply for financial aid, will this affect the admissions decision for my child?
No. Financial aid decisions are made after a student has been accepted.

Will our family be considered for financial aid if only one parent is employed?
An exception may be made if a parent is staying home to care for a pre school-aged child, a child with a disability, parent or grandparent, or other special circumstances. Please advise the Financial Aid Committee of this when applying for aid.

What information is required in order to determine an award for single or divorced parents?
In the case of divorced or separated parents, both natural parents are obligated to contribute to the education of their child(ren). The School cannot be bound by divorce decrees and both parents are required to provide the requested financial and supplemental information. In some instances and at the School’s discretion, one parent may be released from obligation. These situations are handled on a case-by-case basis.

Is there a salary minimum that automatically qualifies?
There is no minimum salary requirement in order to qualify for financial aid. The information submitted to SSS is a guide for the FA committee to use in consideration of financial aid awards. Extenuating circumstances, if applicable, are also considered.

Do you offer multiple-child discounts as part of financial aid?
We do not offer multiple child discounts. The financial aid process does, however, take into account the number of children a family has attending tuition charging schools.

Does a family have to reapply for financial aid each year?
A family must re-apply for financial aid every year. If your financial situation remains stable, the amount of the award will be relatively constant.
If you still have questions regarding financial aid, please contact Valerie Kohles, Director of Finance and Operations, at 410-809-2396 or Diane Russell, DIRECTOR OF ADMISSION, at 410-809-2403.
